The Borough of Glassboro Announces the Grand Opening of the Pickleball Complex on Tuesday, June 8th at 2pm
GLASSBORO, NEW JERSEY --- The Borough of Glassboro is thrilled to announce that construction is complete on a state-of-the-art pickleball complex at East New Street Park. Located just one mile from Downtown Glassboro, the new complex will feature nine courts, complete with freshly painted lines, new nets, and other enhancements.
Glassboro Mayor John E. Wallace III expressed his enthusiasm for the new courts, stating, "The Borough of Glassboro is thrilled to be bringing first class pickleball courts to our New Street Park, and further improving the quality of life for our residents. The addition of this new recreational amenity will provide countless hours of enjoyment for all."
Pickleball, a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, has been gaining popularity nationwide. Played with a wooden paddle and a lightweight plastic ball, the game can accommodate two, three, or four players on a court that closely resembles a badminton court.
Built at the site of an underutilized street hockey rink prone to vandalism, the pickleball courts will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. However, there are plans to implement a reservation system and potentially organize programs and leagues for players of all skill levels.
Elena Power, Director of Parks and Recreation, highlighted the significance of this new amenity, stating, "The introduction of the new pickleball courts at Glassboro’s New Street Park, will allow us to offer an addition recreational opportunity to our community. Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that residents of all ages can participate in. Our mission as Parks and Recreation and Glassboro as a whole, is to ensure that all residents have access to recreational opportunities, including outdoor activities like pickleball."
Funding for the new pickleball complex was supported through the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs Local Recreation Improvement Grant. “Glassboro is known for the quality and beauty of our parks and fields,” added Councilmember, Andrew Halter. “The grant funding is playing a pivotal role in restoring a vital recreational space for the community.”
