Glassboro’s Heroes to be Honored with a Military Flyover on Memorial Day
The Glassboro Memorial Day Parade Committee is pleased to announce that they have successfully requested and received approval for an Air Force fighter jet flyover on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th. The F16 jets will be piloted by the New Jersey Air National Guard 177th Fighter Wing based in Atlantic City. Get ready for an exhilarating sight as the jets will be soaring over Glassboro at 10:22 am. Coming in from the East and heading West, the F16 jets will be flying over High Street towards the University.
“The support we receive from New Jersey Air National Guard 177th Fighter Wing is second to none and this series of flyovers provides us an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to our community, while also demonstrating an important part of the Fighter Wing’s vision statement of local to global,” expressed Andrew Halter, Glassboro Councilman
The 177th Fighter Wing’s Mission is to Provide Dominant Airpower and Mission-Ready Airmen for America and New Jersey. 177FW Vision Statement is: “Local to Global” and it’s Focus Areas are Mission…People, Personal Accountability, Work/Life Balance, and Future Missions. The 177FW motto is “Own It…Bring It!”
Glassboro’s fallen have been honored by the NJ Air National Guard’s 177th Fighter Wing with flyovers in previous years, most recently in 2023. “The 177th Fighter Wing is honored to be able to provide a military flyover for the Glassboro Memorial Day Parade this year,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Derek B. Routt, 177th Fighter Wing commander. “Jersey Devil Airmen are privileged to serve the greatest nation in history and today we honor the fallen who have given their last full measure of devotion to that nation.”
The Glassboro Memorial Day parade is a time-honored tradition that has been celebrated for over 100 years. This patriotic event serves as a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in battle. The parade features award-winning string bands, the beloved children’s bike brigade, and various military veteran groups.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving their country,” said Daniele Spence, Councilwoman and Committee Co-Chair. “We can never fully repay that debt to their families and loved ones, but we must honor their sacrifice with a day of recognition.”
The parade will commence at 10:00 am, starting at the intersection of Lehigh and University. It will then proceed through Downtown Glassboro, traveling along Whitney and High streets before concluding at Academy. Following the parade, a solemn ceremony will be held in the town square at the corner of Main and High streets.
